Meditation Part One

Our Outer World

Now that you have chosen to wake up and escape your personal prison your first task is to get to know yourself.  Yesterday the focus was on remembering to stay awake.  Another way to say this is you are remembering your Self.  In getting to know Self we are observing our thoughts, feelings and actions as we are experiencing our world.  These activities – remembering Self and observing self will be consistent practices always.  As long as you choose to remain conscious and aware this will become like breathing.

Our Inner World

We’ve been looking at the Mirror, our outer world, our experience.  As well we want to look within.  A key practise for acquainting ourselves with our selves is through Meditation.

If you have the courage to observe yourself in your outer world you also have it within you to move into your inner world.  Should you decide to dedicate yourself to a daily meditation practise there are many ways to go about it.  You do not have to sit in a single position for hours.  For some, learning a specific way to meditate is best.  But we are individuals and one method may work for some and not others.  Don’t give up if your first experience with meditation does not feel right for you.

A few ways to start:

  • go for a meditative walk – simply observe your environment without thinking.  Just walk and look.

  • set a timer for one minute – sit comfortably, close your eyes and focus on your breath.
  • light a candle and watch the flame.  If you notice thoughts let them go and refocus on the flame.

The objective is to give yourself a moment or two of peace, a mini-vacation from the outer world.

    I truely enjoy how you break it down to a simple step to get started. I have not tried one minute meditations but I will be doing them now. Learning to stop the mind from wild random thoughts even for a minute or two cah be so helpful in finding inner peach.I enjoy walking meditations but I find that the beauty of nature can fill my mind.When I look at a tree as a tree, that is what I see. When I look at it as a work of nature, a gift to help clean the air we breath, shade on a hot day, fire wook to cook with, logs to build a house, home to many creatures and food for others, that becomes my meditation.
