Healing and Basic Needs Part Two

Our Basic Needs

  • Safety and Security – At first we really need simply to be fed, sheltered, kept clean and held close and safe.   As we get older we need to have a sense that our parents will be there when we need them.  We need to feel and trust that we are always cared for and that we can depend on it.  We need to feel that the world is a safe place and that no harm will come to us.

  • Control or Autonomy – As infants we need everything done for us but a sense of having some control comes from being attended to as soon as we cry.  As we get older we need to feel we have choices and that we can make them for ourselves.  We develop a sense of self responsibility and self determination.

It certainly doesn’t always come down to this

but I thought I’d lighten things up a little. 😉

  • Acceptance and Approval – We all need to feel like we belong and that we are accepted just as we are.  We need to know that we are not judged as anything less than perfect as us.  We need to have a sense that we are seen as an integral part of our world.

  • Love – We need to feel that we are loved unconditionally.  We need to know that ‘no matter what’ we are loved.  We need to know that there are no strings attached or conditions to our being loved.
